Born 1946 in Harare. Died 1991. Uli Beier, the acknowledged German art promoter and writer, in his book Contemporary Art in Africa (1968) described Mteki as the most important artist of the emerging workshop school of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. Boira Mteki was born in Harae and was a founding member of the school. Mteki created strong monolithic heads in those early days which remain amongst the most uncompromising and stark images of the genre. Small in stature with a much troubled personal life he has left a legacy of exceptionally powerful sculpture.
